What is Western Acupuncture and what is it used for?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin at certain points on the body. It has been used for a huge variety of conditions, aiming to relieve pain, reduce tension and promote healing. It can work particularly well in conjunction with other physiotherapy techniques.

If you are struggling with any kind of pain, get in touch below to find out if acupuncture could help.

How does Acupuncture work?

Western medicine bases acupuncture treatments on the theory that it can reduce pain by stimulating the brain to produce natural pain-relieving hormones such as endorphins, serotonin and melatonin which promote better sleep and feelings of well being and happiness. It is also thought that the needles stimulate nerves and muscle tissue promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

What will happen during the treatment?

Prior to any treatment you will receive a full physiotherapy assessment to help plan your treatment and ensure that acupuncture is the best approach for your condition. The treatment itself will involve the gentle and precise insertion of very fine, sterile needles into various ‘acupuncture points’ on your body.

What does Acupuncture feel like?

You may feel a slight prick as the needle is inserted, but it is far less than what you might feel whilst having an injection. Once the needles are inserted, you may feel a warm sensation, tingling, or a dull ache. Many people find the sensation very relaxing.
