Myofascial Release

What is Myofascial Release?

Connecting all the bones, muscles and cells in your body is a continuous tissue called fascia.

When this tissue is healthy it is fluid and hydrated. However, when it's unhealthy it becomes hardened and dehydrated, which can result in scar tissue or adhesions in the underlying areas.

The health of the fascial layer can affect a muscles ability to function and heal.

This can have profound effects on the body as unhealthy fascia in one part of the body could be affecting muscular restriction in another part of the body. It's all connected!

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a technique that works specifically on the fascia around the muscles, as well as working the muscles themselves.

Fascial restriction may be involved in problems such as-

  • Pain from injuries e.g. Whiplash, Sports
  • Repetitive strain problems  - RSI, Carpal Tunnel, Texters/Gamers thumb, Tennis/Golfers Elbow
  • Rotator Cuff problems e.g Frozen Shoulder, 'Tendonitis',
  • Stress induced muscle tension including Headaches, Shoulder/Back Pain

To heal effectively and in the longer-term, it is really important that the fascia is also worked during a massage treatment.

A MFR treatment can be combined with massage but is also a stand alone treatment. No oil or wax is used in MFR, and it can vary from extremely light work to quite deep which can feel temporarily uncomfortable as the fascia releases.
